DFM – Thinking Thin

Thin is challenging to web manufacturing, web converting and web handling.  In manufacturing, the absolute thickness profile errors tend to remain the same as thickness decreases.  That means the relative profile errors, what the wound roll will complain on, increases.  Also, to design a machine that is both delicate and sturdy at the same time is a challenge.  Also, to design any but the narrowest machines to control nip and tension to tolerances better than a pound or kilogram is a challenge.  Yet these and other challenges are inevitable for many of us because the economies of thin are compelling:  less material cost and more environmentally friendly.  Click on the link at the bottom for the explanations.
Finally, don’t miss my Web Handling and Winding classes, September 5-8 in Munich Germany or in November in Stockholm.  Please note that web handling should be taken prior to the winding class.  Those who can’t get a signoff from their boss to travel to Germany can take the same material on their own computer and on their own schedule via video-on-demand training, also through AIMCAL’s Converting School.
