Smurfit Kappa – Sustainable packaging design competition launched
IRELAND • According to a study, 40% of the total demand for plastic in Europe is for packaging requirements. Hence, Smurfit Kappa has launched a packaging design competition in a bid to encourage the development of sustainable packaging solutions. It seeks ideas from designers, engineers, inventors and creative thinkers, to address the growing challenge of non-recyclable waste.
The sustainable packaging design competition outlines two specific challenges. The first challenge involves the development of an alternative for the plastic stretch wrap used around pallets during storage and delivery. The second is for the development of a fully paper-based parcel with thermal protection for chocolates. This packaging is to be used in e-commerce sales channels.
The competition is open until 29 March 2019. The winner of each design challenge will receive EUR 8,000 and their innovation will be exhibited at the Smurfit Kappa innovation event in May.
