Overtemperature

By Clarence Klassen

Drives in web handling suffer from many forms of overtemperature. Temperature is one of the main causes of failure of drive-system components.

Motor insulation degrades with high temperatures. The high temperature is typically due to high load and motor current. It may be due to inadequate cooling air, particularly at low RPM. The high temperature may come from ovens, lighting, or chemical processes.

The motor encoder may degrade if it is on a hot motor.

Cables overheat if they carry more than rated current or if they are close to other cables. Follow local codes, but the national electrical codes provide excellent guidance for sizing conductors.

Lastly, the power electronics in the drive can overheat if overloaded or if the cooling fan or cooling liquid system fails.
